About Clemson Skydiving
Clemson University's Skydiving Club, also known as the "Dixie Skydivers", has been in operation since 1959, making it one of the oldest collegiate skydiving clubs in the nation. The Dixie Skydivers were not recognized by Clemson until 1962 when the club announced that they would be jumping onto Bowman Field. Dean Walter Cox said that anyone who landed on Bowman field would be kicked out of the school, so in front of a crowd of 1,000, a skydiver ran out onto Bowman field, climbed up a ladder, jumped, and pulled his ripcord while yelling "geronimo!". Shortly after their stunt, the club was recognized by the university.
Today we exist to get any Clemson student who wants to experience freefall the opportunity to jump out of a "perfectly good airplane."
